German is the second most common language spoken in Europe, after Russian. The official language of Germany, German is also spoken in Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and many other parts of Europe, and the world. There are even some German-speaking communities in the US. Choosing to major in German language prepares you to communicate, empathize, and experience these different people and culture. With a long, rich history behind the language and multiple cultures that it covers, a German degree is a great way to connect with people all over the world.

Example career options for those who major in German:
Placement rates aren’t available for the general population of those who choose to major in German Language, but there is a lot of variety in potential careers. A German degree can offer diverse career paths from business to government to education, and more, with an estimated median salary of around $49,500. Even with the great variety in potential careers, it’s still important to prepare during your college career to give yourself the best possible chance of success following graduation.
The first important thing to do with a German degree is to know the language. That sounds obvious, but beyond just being good in German class, you need to have a native-level grasp of the language. You need to understand not just literal translations, but also tone, connotations, and implied meaning based on context, like you would in your first language. To pursue a career with a German degree, you need to be comfortable speaking and listening to the language. To achieve this, you have to put in considerable time outside of class hours and homework. Reading German stories, news, watching German shows, and listening to German music, getting a feel for not just the language but the way that the culture shapes it.
The best thing to do to really achieve native-level fluency is to immerse yourself in a German-speaking community. Often with foreign language degrees, like German, a semester abroad is a required part of your education, but not always. Whether it’s required or not, if you choose to major in German, prioritize a semester abroad in a German-speaking location, like Germany or other European countries that have a high population of German-speakers. This will force you to apply what you learn in real time, teach you how to interact and notice the more subtle but important parts of communication that are difficult to capture from the classroom.
Internships and practical experience in a workplace using your language skills is also key to preparing yourself for success after graduation. The caveat with this is that you’ll want to prioritize internships/jobs that are relevant to the career that you want to pursue after college. Because there is so much diversity in the careers that you can pursue with a German degree, it’s important to narrow your focus and tailor your education and work experience. That said, considering a double major in business, political science, communication, sociology, or whatever relates to the career you want is definitely a good idea to help properly prepare you for the future. During your internships/jobs and study abroad opportunities, make connections and keep in contact with them. Build a network in the industry that you plan to go into with people who can vouch for your character and skills, and who can keep an ear to the ground for opportunities that may be a good fit for you.
Self-motivation and perseverance are necessary characteristics to propel you from the classroom to the career field, especially with a German degree. Learning a language takes time, practice, and lots of mistakes. Be patient with yourself, learn from the mistakes, and put in the practice. You need to be confident and flexible, as any career involving communication means moving with the conversation and the shifting with each new scenario as it arises. Dedication and cultural adaptivity are also important, as different cultural perspectives meet in the classroom, boardroom, and at the table. Be intentional about understanding others and communicating clearly. These combined characteristics can make any individual well suited for a career in business, politics, education, and even ministry!
