How is the social scene different at a Christian college?

As with most aspects of college life, the details of what a social scene looks like will vary depending on the college one attends. When it comes to Christian colleges, there are many consistent expectations, though not identical, but they may be upheld to different degrees.

A common example that comes to mind when discussing a social scene at college is “partying.” Based on depictions from media and wild stories on the news or social media, partying is seen as a given on college campuses, especially from state or public schools. Christian colleges commonly do not advocate for or even allow many of the things on their campus that are associated with a college partying scene (ie. Alcohol, drugs, smoking, sex).

Christian colleges hold students to a higher moral standard, based on the Bible. They typically have codes of conduct that encourage modesty, appropriate interactions between those of the opposite sex, and, generally, do not allow any alcohol or substance on campus. The goal of their codes of conduct is not to restrict students to a suffocating lifestyle, but to create an atmosphere that encourages students to grow closer to God and free them from things that would pull them away or encourage sin.

Christian colleges will offer much more opportunity for spiritual growth in things like chapel services, bible studies, campus ministry events, and so on. Ideally, the social scene will reflect the values of the school as students who attend a Christian college are also trying to grow closer to God and live out His will in their lives.

That’s not to say that there will not be “parties” at a Christian college or get togethers; they will just look different. There is no perfect place, either. At any school or setting where people gather, there will be some people who choose a more secular lifestyle. Ultimately, the sort of people one surrounds themself with and the things they choose to participate in will determine the social scene far more than school guidelines will.

The ideal is that the social scene at a Christian college will reflect the values and morals that are found in the Bible and will create an environment that honors God and encourages spiritual growth and community.
